A KID WITH A CONNECTION TO NATURE & GIFTS OF GOLD

I grew up far from the beach in the magnificent, towering mountains surrounding Zurich.

Shells were always fascinating me, being so small and captivating. I used to collect them whenever I had the chance to be on a beach as a kid.

I admit I really started to get blissfully addicted to gold leaf work when I moved to the Margate and Cliftonville coast on the Isle of Thanet, Kent, UK.

A whole new world of forms and colours opened up for me, and I couldn’t resist to collect and collect and collect… and they started to lay around everywhere in my flat and studio.

Seraina Baumgartner is a contemporary Swiss graphic designer and letterform artist known for her refined use of classical Roman lettering traditions within modern design contexts. Her work frequently draws on historical serif typefaces such as Caslon, Baskerville, and Trajan, using their proportions and structural logic as a foundation rather than treating them as decorative pastiche. Baumgartner’s approach reflects a kinship understanding of inscriptional Roman capitals and early print book typography. Typefaces like Caslon and Baskerville populate her work through their balance of calligraphic stroke contrast and elegant forms, while Trajan’s influence is evident in her use of monumental capitals, classical spacing, and stone-carved strength.
